In 1979 I was stationed at an Air Force intelligence site in Puglia, just up the road from Brindisi.
What a place to be 19-years old. Beaches like Baja. Weather like San Diego. The food of the Gods. Incredibly kind and generous people. And the prettiest girls.
In June 2018 a buddy and I returned there on a nostalgia trip that awed and amazed us at every turn.
The base was shuttered – time and technology made its Cold War mission redundant. Our favorite beach at Torre Santa Sabina was remarkably the same. And Brindisi was much lovelier and more charming than we remembered.
After forty years my buddy and I had changed and aged, but Puglia is forever enchanting.
