The USB Myth Busted: You Can Unplug Like a Rebel…

For years I have been dutifully performing the ‘Remove hardware…’ routine before unplugging a USB flash drive, camera, or other USB device from my PC.

Well, according to the PC World crew, so long as data is not being read from or written to the device at the time, you can yank it out without causing any harm to the device or your PC.

Again, so long as data is not being written to or read from the USB device at the time, there is no need to cringe or feel guilty if you remove it the fast way. Windows will complain, and if you plug the device back in almost immediately it may not recognize it, but otherwise don’t let that ‘Remove hardware safely…’ routine make you late for anything…
